An Education In Siding- Part I

When most people hear the word “siding”, they immediately think of vinyl siding. However, there are many more options than just vinyl. In this series of posts, I will be covering the basics of siding, and slowly expand into details of each of the different kinds of siding

What Exactly Is Siding?

I define siding as the exterior wall cladding on a building.  Very broad, right?  Most people think more in the narrow terms of wood, vinyl, or cement siding, leaving brick, stone, and stucco out of the conversation.  In Texas and Louisiana, many homes have brick installed, as well as one of the other forms of siding. It is common down here to have brick on the front of the house, and siding on other 3 sides. It also is common to have brick on the 1st floor, and siding on the 2nd floor.

Each type of siding has its pros, and each has its cons. For example, James Hardie fiber cement siding is great because it resists rot and termites, but it usually more costly. Meanwhile, Mastic vinyl siding tends to cost less, however, is more difficult to repair if there is ever damage.

What Is The Purpose Of Siding?

Siding that’s in good condition helps to keep water, cold, and heat out of your home.  It acts as a first barrier for the sun, wind, and rain.  Imagine living under a patio cover, with no walls.  Not very much fun, is it?

While the primary purpose of siding is to help keep the elements out, it also serves to enhance the appearance of your home.  Think about the last time you drove through a neighborhood, and saw a freshly painted home.  Remember how gorgeous it looked?  Sometimes all a home needs for a little TLC.  There are other times where rot or storm damage has taken its toll, and the siding needs repaired or replaced.

When it comes to repairs, usually you want to match the material as closely as you can.  When it comes to replacement, there are several options to choose from.

Next time around, I will start to get into the differences between siding materials.
